Explore Riverside with Local Discovery Tour: Water Ways

January 31, 2022 @ 8:00 am - February 6, 2022 @ 5:00 pm

Get ready to explore locally!!

TAKE THE TOUR

As part of the city wide program “Local Discoveries” hosted by the city’s six Local Arts Service Organizations, East End Arts has created this tour and two others throughout Toronto’s east end, celebrating some of the incredible pieces of public art east of the Don River.

Along with following each tour in Driftscape, visit EEA’s website to find out where you can purchase beautiful hand printed original illustrated maps of each route, access educational resources to share with the whole family, and more.

There are videos that accompany many of the stops along this tour, many created by EEA for this project, and a few from some of the other groups that make public art happen. In these videos you can further explore the artworks at each stop, and meet the artists who made them. We’ve included the audio from those videos as part of the narration for anyone who isn’t using data on their walks.

Living close to the lake makes east enders particularly conscious of our relationship to water and waterways. All along Queen East, and down to Lake Ontario, explore murals that take on the theme of water and our relationship to the landscape where we find ourselves. Starting at the Queen St. bridge, we begin this route with the words, “The river I step in is not the river I stand in.” What do those words mean to you? What is your connection to the waterways of Toronto?

This tour is approximately 5km long, and may take around an hour and a half walking (faster if you hop on and off the famous 501 streetcar).

We acknowledge the land we are travelling on is the traditional territory of many nations including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples and is now home to many diverse First Nations, Inuit and Meìtis peoples. We also acknowledge that Toronto is covered by Treaty 13 signed with the Mississaugas of the Credit.

Each of the #Eastendarts Local Discoveries tours is narrated by Errol Nazareth, journalist, educator, and host of CBC’s “Big City Small World,” and  “Frequencies.”
