While most people simply update their wardrobe for autumn, others take a more committed approach to the transition by getting a new ‘do. Seeing the trees turn and leaves fall compels us to make a change in the same way, too.
Whether you’re going for a subtle trim or a full 360, here are 5 reminders from Toronto’s Riverside neighbourhood businesses to keep in mind before going to the salon:

Decide on a cut or style.
Impulse decisions almost always never end well so do your research. Look into what styles suit your face shape, save photos as reference, etc. When in doubt, consult a professional! UNTITLED by Flaunt Boutique, for example, does personal one-on-one consultations.

Find the right products for your hair.
Some products are designed for specific types of hair, whether it’s based on texture or colour. When you’re getting your hair done, don’t hesitate to ask your stylist for recommendations. They might also even have them, like how Lone & Co. Salon has a curated selection of hair care up on their website.

Build a connection with your stylist.
When you go to someone who’s already familiar with your hair and your preferences in terms of style or colour, it makes the process so much easier. Hair Code has their team’s bios on their website, complete with work emails should you want to reach out to them.

Find out what they’re known for.
Although most businesses these days offer the full breadth of services, they usually have a speciality. Album Hair is known for their colouring; Glassbox is an award-winning barbershop for the gents. Broadview Beauty Parlour (and George’s classic fade) is a Riverside institution–it’s been in business for decades for a good reason.

Have realistic expectations.
This kind of change is not a one-off situation. Say you have dark-coloured hair and plan on going blonde; you have to keep in mind that this will come with a ton of care and maintenance, especially if you plan to keep the color for a long period of time. If you feel like you’re ready to make the jump, go for it!
