On July 11^th, 2013 – Starting at 6PM, our neighbourhood Herbalist and City Farmer, Danette Steele, will teach us about the ultimate in accessible, local and sustainable food and medicine. Participants will learn about the local wild plants and how to use them safely as we gather up the weeds around our local Riverside Good Food Market!

This workshop starts at the corner of Queen Street East and Saulter Street – close by the Riverside Good Food Market. It will be an amazing opportunity to learn that many of the weeds that we pull out of our vegetable and flower gardens, that we walk by in our local parks and along our sidewalks are actually good for us!  About 5-10 wild plants will be identified,  harvested and explained (Plantain, Dandelion, Burdock, Yellow dock, Motherwort – among others ….) as you learn different ways to heal all sorts of health problems, and helps your community at the same time!

Danette Steele, M.A., RH (OHA), has more than 25 years of experience as a community and clinical herbal practitioner. With a busy private herbal practice in both Toronto and Halifax, Danette consults and teaches widely on self-sufficiency and sustainable practices for health and wellness using medicinal plants. Danette loves to share healing plant wisdom. She creates a participant-focused approach in her teaching spaces and is committed to a joyous and rigorous herbal learning experience – through workshops, consultations, weed walks, herbal intensives, plant meditations and herbal courses.

Wild herbal teas will be available for tasting – so please bring your travel mug and wear your comfy clothes if you plan to help with the clean-up!

As a charity partner for Eats & Beats Street Fest, The Riverside BIA partnered with Nellie’s Shelter for Women and Children, who were celebrating their 40^th anniversary.

Among the festivities Nellie’s had a caking cutting and photo exhibition,  A Life Reclaimed by Annie Sakkab.

In addition to their anniversary celebrations, Nellie’s raised over $700 in donations during the event.  These funds will go towards supporting Nellie’s kids summer camp programs.

From music, art, cooking, sports, and outings around the city, children from Nellie’s shelter and community will have the opportunity to engage in social, recreational, and educational experiences they otherwise would not have.  To find out more about this summer camp program you can click here to find out more

Riverside Talks is where local residents meet once a month to learn something new, find out what’s going on in the neighbourhood, and get to know each other. It’s the ideal opportunity to share their vision for change in a community setting of business owners, other residents and city officials. Riverside Talks will be held on the last Tuesday of every month at the An Sibin Pub, 709 Queen Street East.

The Agenda is as follows:

• 7:20pm – 7:30pm – Updates from Riverside BIA

Meet Your Neighbour

Three people will get the chance to introduce themselves in front of everyone and have a few minutes to talk about their life in the neighbourhood and what they like most about the area.

Words from the Councillor’s Office

Councillor Paula Fletcher or a designated member of her staff will have the chance to talk about what they have planned for the neighbourhood or discuss any other matters involving the community.

Riverside BIA

The Riverside Business Improvement Area (BIA) extends from the DVP to Empire Ave along Queen Street. The Riverside BIA works to promote the Riverside as a distinctive shopping and dining area through streetscape improvements (public art, benches, street planters), events (Eats & Beats, Walk Fest, Light up the Riverside), and providing general maintenance, marketing and long term planning. They will be discussing what is upcoming in the Riverside, and how the residents can get involved.

Open Discussion

A Facebook page has been set up to submit topics for community discussion and items requiring a vote. During this time, we will try to go through as many topics possible starting from the top.

Live and Learn

The evening will end with an engaging session of live entertainment or informative seminar. Be it live music, stand up comedy, magic show, poetry reading or gardening 101, the goal of Live and Learn is to provide an interactive experience for the community.
