Get To Know Your Bike Better with Switchback Cyclery at Riverside Eats & Beats June 6th

As part of the June 6th Riverside’s Eats & Beats StreetFEST, Switchback Cyclery will be at Munro and Queen St. E. hosting a clinic on the most important skill for spring cycling (and any time of year really!): how to fix your flat tire. Come visit them at the festival or at their shop at 651 Queen St. E. for all your cycling questions and needs!

Switchback has a good selection of  quality bicycles and accessories to suit a range of cycling styles, and they are experts when it comes to building customized bikes; they will work with you to talk through and plan out your ideal cycle in detail to come up with a design that meets your needs. They also install racks, fenders, and other accessories to your bike and do repairs big and small!

Switchback Cyclery has its origins in Sanctuary, a Christian charitable organization where they offer friendship to anyone who is in need of consolation. They believe that there is joy and dignity from having a meaningful and purposeful occupation, so they take this motivation to further develop their experience and success.

“Ready, set, play!” with the Queen/Saulter Library at June 6 Riverside Eats & Beats Streetfest

Explore your imagination with Pan Am Games-themed activities by the Queen/Saulter Library!

From 1pm to 5pm on June 6 the Queen/Saulter Library at 765 Queen Street East will have playful Pan Am Games-themed animations as part of the  Riverside Eats & Beats Streetfest!

The Library will have a variety of interactive kids activities with face painting and model making where you can make your own version of Pachi, the official mascot of the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am / Parapan Am Games!

Don’t miss meeting local author Elizabeth Muir. She will be signing her new book “Riverdale East of the Don” which tells the history of the Riverdale area.

 

FUN FACTS:

An episode of the Kids of Degrassi Street (the original Degrassi series) was filmed in the branch. The branch exterior and the surrounding area was made up to appear to be from the 1930s for the filming of the movie Cinderella Man. Many other films and TV shows have been filmed in or around the branch.

The branch opened in 1979 and was relocated in 1980 to the former Postal Station G, designed in 1913 by architect E. J. Lennox, the architect who also designed Old City Hall, Casa Loma and the King Edward Hotel! The wooden branch doors, marble flooring and marble counters date back to 1913.  The branch shares its space with the Ralph Thornton Centre, a multipurpose community facility that serves the greater Riverdale area.

Picture 334In addition to its greats books and multi-media, the branch has fun and free programs like the Lego Club, Saturday Family time, health and wellness talks, and a whole schedule of great programming. Also, be sure to make use of the library’s great services like after hours book drop, express checkout, pedometer lending and computer workstations and free WI-FI.

I am Donating 10 % of all sales from Here & Now to the charity I helped start in Kathmandu Nepal. It is called The Joy Foundation Nepal and was started in 1996 with my Nepali friends who are compassionate and caring business men.

We have successfully helped 4,000 people receive cataract operations and more than 26,000 have received various eye care treatments. We have also helped numerous students with sponsorships to further their education.


Unfortunately Nepal is one of the poorest countries in the world, and since the devastating earthquake hit Nepal April 25 life there just got a lot more difficult. So I am trying to raise as much money as possible to send to The Joy Foundation by the end of June.


I am sending this to my great customers and friends and want you to know that the money will go directly to the Nepali people.

Hullmark Developments Bringing the Riverside Bridge to Light June 5th!

Riverside Bridge - Artist Mock-up -Paul Boken 2014On the evening of Friday, June 5th, the Riverside BIA and community will launch the Riverside Gateway Bridge Project – a $600,000 capital installation illuminating the iconic Riverside Bridge. The bridge is the gateway to Toronto’s Riverside District, located on Queen Street East, between the DVP and Empire Avenue.

 

This historic moment is the culmination of three years of effort and planning to bring key partners and sponsors to the table. Hullmark Developments was the first sponsor to commit to sharing the Riverside BIA’s vision to bring the Bridge to light – seeing this as a unique opportunity to invest in the community where they work and play.

Hullmark’s roots are in Toronto and they have always maintained a strong focus on “invest[ing] in the future of Toronto and its citizens”. The company was founded in 1950 by Murphy Hull, who grew up in Toronto as a young polish immigrant. He began in the industry as a plasterer and progressed into home building and then real estate development – pioneering ‘condominium development’ in the 1970s, when it was a ‘new and interesting housing typology’!
