New! Riverside Pop-Up Shop

Store front, former Hardware Interiors shop

Just in time for the holidays, a trio of craft-show veterans have set up in the old Hardware Interiors space at 760 Queen Street East, bringing hand-crafted goods from around the city and around the world to Riverside. Those of us waiting for a restaurant or bar in the space will be waiting a little longer for it to become something permanent, but from now until December 24th we have a cozy shop with fun goods warming up the space.

The focus here is on natural fibres, upcycled pieces, and reusable products. Hand-made leather journals ($8-small) are filled with natural paper and can be refilled rather than replaced, and leather clutches made from local scraps as well. Coffee bags are made into sturdy jute totes and sell for $5 (3 for $12). Alpaca knits from Peru (scarves for $15-25), leather bags and books from India, and local knit goods are all great gift ideas for the holidays and round out the offerings in the shop.  Buying gifts for others? There’s handmade decorative paper from India for a mere $2 per sheet to wrap the goodies up.

Shelle, Jessica and Daisy are often found across Toronto from flea markets to shows and fairs.  Between them they are usually at the Leslieville Flea, the Royal Winter Fair, Brickworks Farmers Market, and usual hot spots for handmade gear around town.   A friend-of-a-friend connected them with the owners of the space, and they decided to take over the unit before its next incarnation.  Jessica says “people often ask ‘where’s your store?’ and now we can tell them we actually have one!”

Mustard Seed; bringing Light to Riverside

Mustard Seed has been a dedicated partner of the Riverside BIA and they will be hosting this year’s Light Up the Riverside event on November 29th at 791 Queen Street East, from 5pm to 7pm.

Mustard Seed/ Sisters of St. Joseph and Fontbonne Place have and continue to be a nurturing community for Riverside’s older generations. Their mission is to offer a welcoming environment and sacred space where life skills can grow, where creative energies can be unleashed, where imagination, playfulness, beauty can be celebrated, where self-worth, dignity, healing, wholeness and spirituality can flourish and above all, where community is nourished.

During the Light Up Riverside event, which will feature the Toronto Beach Chorale and Santa Claus; Mustard Seed will also be having Craft sale including Knitting and pottery which could be great Christmas gifts for loved ones. Part of the proceeds from the sale are donated to charities in the community.

A Brief History of Mustard Seed/Sisters of St. Joseph/FontBonne Place

SISTERS OF ST. JOSEPH began in 1651 in southern France to serve the needy. The order has spread throughout the world. 4 Sisters of 4 different nationalities came to Canada in 1851 (via the U.S.) to care for victims of the Irish famine: orphans and the sick in fever sheds They went on to establish hospitals, schools, homes for the needy, addiction treatment in Toronto and across Canada, plus third–world missions.

FONTBONNE PLACE. In1999, St. Michael’s Hospital (then owned & operated by the Sisters of St. Joseph) pulled out of their satellite clinic at 791 Queen St. E. The Sisters sought what needs could be served there. Permanent safe affordable housing for women 40 to 60 was decided upon. As the zoning laws permit only 3 storeys, there are only18 one-bedroom apartments plus a 3- bedroom on the ground floor.

MUSTARD SEED. The space on the ground floor adjacent to the buildings next door and the basement were unsuitable for housing. Sister Gwen Smith, who had worked for 10 years in Parkdale in social justice (including housing, refugees, community gardens, community kitchens and wholesale food store), was invited to explore what needs might be met in this space. With the government reduced resources for social services, Sister was told not to siphon funds or resources from other services, but rely solely on support from the Sisters and their benefactors.

With encouragement from agencies like Ralph Thornton, South Riverdale Community Health Centre, Jimmy Simpson, St. Michael’s Hospital and Woodgreen a community garden, community kitchen and an art group were started. Other Sisters & friends added their talents of sewing, health care, foot care, counseling, spirituality, meditation, computer training, crafts, gentle tai chi, self-expression via writing, baking. East End Drop-in Network asked Mustard Seed to provide a drop-in in the cold weather. Mustard Seed was a founding member of the Riverdale Food Working Group, which promotes affordable nutritious food with workshops, markets and farm field trips. These activities are where the mission of Mustard Seed takes place: to nurture community!

Fun Fact!!!  Did you know that Mustard Seed has a garden named the Lasagna Garden? …  where they grow their own foods such as zucchinis’ and tomatoes; and it features a stain glass stepping stone.

Toronto Beach Chorale Warms up Riverside!

A Dynamic Choral Community for East Toronto

TBC at parade 2013

A Musical Invitation!

Bring your family & friends and join members of the Toronto Beach Chorale as we “sing in” the Festive Season at Light up the Riverside Tree Lighting celebration on Saturday Nov 29th from 5-7 pm at the Mustard Seed Gardens (791 Queen Street East). Plus, there will be Treats to warm you up!

Toronto Beach Chorale is pleased to be invited, once again, to the Riverside BIA to join such a vibrant community in this fun, family-friendly event.

Now in their 7th season, Toronto Beach Chorale – an energetic musical presence in East Toronto – is a mixed-voice, auditioned concert choir of 50 to 60 members with a passion for great choral music.

Toronto Beach Chorale partners with other local arts groups and engages professional orchestras, ensembles, accompanists and emerging and professional singers from the wider Toronto music scene.

Our innovative Artistic Director, Mervin William Fick, MusBac., A.R.C.T. C.R.C.C.O. has been transforming choirs, inspiring individuals and raising performance levels of community, church and professional choirs for over 30 years. He is the founding director of the Toronto Beach Chorale, the Artistic Director of the MCS Chorus of Mississauga, and conductor of the PCS Singers of Brampton and the National Award winning Esprit Chamber Choir.

“I believe the choral experience to be one of the most intensely exciting of all musical experiences for singers and audiences alike. Its benefits reach far beyond the concert hall to touch the daily lives of all those involved – the true music experience is a shared one.”         Mervin William Fick

What people say about TBC…

Fabulous! The music was great and well performed. I really enjoyed the talk given at the beginning.”

“Wow! That was an amazing concert last night. Your choir is soaringly wonderful – beautiful voices and harmonies. And the instrumental stuff was great. Terrific choice of music – perfectly balanced.” – Gay Claitman & Kent Bowman

“As a result of your joyful music, we received so many compliments on your performance. We were privileged to have you perform at our anniversary.” – Debbie Visconti (Community Centre 55)

In addition to getting people warmed up with festive classics on November 29th, The Toronto Beach Chorale is performing throughout the holidays.

The Dynamic Duo Light Up the Riverside on Nov 29th

Get the Inside Scoop on Matt & Ben

Matt_and_Ben_Car

You may be used to seeing Matt and Ben in a suit and tie, working hard to find their clients the perfect property. But, we were interested in finding out more about this charming duo. We interviewed Matt and Ben to find out  more, and  were surprised about their eclectic background and interests that they both have. In fact it was in the in the nightlife industry that these two first met.

What are some of your hobbies/ stuff that you love to do?

Matt – I am a former Dj and nightclub owner who still dabbles.  When I play for a crowd I specialize in house music.  I used to own many nightclubs but my flagship club was called Industry located at King/Strachan and was regarding as one of the best nightclubs in the world.  In my spare time I’m an avid golfer, skier and recreational cyclist.  At the end of the day my favourite thing to do is to cook for my girlfriend Solina and ideally watch some sports or a movie.  I have a very close relationship with a large network of friends and family.

Ben –I am a family man with 2 great kids: Ben Jr and Addyson. Spending time with my awesome family, playing hockey and relaxing at the cottage are some of my favourite hobbies.  I am also really involved in different charitable initiatives including Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Big Brothers, and Good Shepherd Hostel.

What do you love about the East-End and in particular Riverside – what makes this area so unique?

Matt – Firstly I love my loft at Carlaw and Dundas which was initially why I moved to the area from downtown more specifically ‘the village’ (Carlton/Church).  I love the mixture of both creative people and professionals that all seem to have a fairly open minded outlook on life.  I also feel the age range in the neighbourhood is a good match for myself now being 41 years old.  Obviously the restaurants along Queen St E are second to none with my favourite spots being Prohibition, Lucky Chinese, Table 17, Bonjour Brioche, Lady Marmalade, The Roy and Ascari.  Of course there are many more that I love but these are the ones that I have been to over and over.

Ben – One of the special characteristics is how close Riverside is to downtown, and yet it still maintains a unique small town character – the people around here are really friendly and there is an authentic community feel with a cosmopolitan flair.

When did you first come to Riverside – and what sold you on the area?

Matt – RE/MAX Hallmark realized that they needed to have some presence here and started to look for a building to purchase.  While the deal on the building we occupy at 785 Queen St E was still conditional, our president invited me to check out the new building and ask me where I would like my new office to be built.  I was thrilled because I live only a few blocks away and approximately 50% of our business is done in the neighbourhood.

Ben – I have actually been living close to Riverside since 2006. I fully got to know this great neighbourhood when we opened up the new RE/MAX Office in the spring of 2012.

What is a fun fact that people may not know about?

Matt – The elephant in the room is that I had a very successful Dj career both in Toronto and around the world.  Many of my clients are surprised to later find out that they have been working with DJ Matt C.  For those of you who don’t know, I had a very popular radio show on CFNY 102.1 live to air from the Phoenix in the early 90’s.  I also had a show on Energy 108 as well as a TV show called Dance Nation on CHCH TV 11 that I hosted.  Moreover, I spun seven nights a week from 1989 to 2001.  It was an amazing time in my life and was a perfect precursor for my current career.  It’s how I met my business partner Ben as well as hundreds of our clients.

Ben – I’ve been working for 10 Years in real estate, but Matt and I have been business partners for 22 years. Before switching into real estate we were nightclub owners and event promoters. Another  funny incident is that I got dressed up as a realtor zombie on Halloween and did a pretty good job a scaring my neighbours.

What is your favourite part about the work that you do?

Matt – I enjoy all aspects of the real estate industry – and I have a love of architecture, interior design and inventory of homes.  I also enjoy the act of generating new clients through interesting marketing initiatives but the single thing that gets me most excited about real estate is generating multiple offers for my sellers or competing in multiple offers with my buyers.  It’s a very high stress emotional part of the business that I feel my experience is a major asset to my clients.

Ben – I love people and I love finding them their dream home. It’s a very rewarding business! Our clients are fantastic and I love making new friends through the work that I do. In fact, we would love for people to join us for the tree lighting ceremony at Light up Riverside on Nov 30th and join us for a cocktail at our yearly holiday cheer event at Prohibition in support of the Daily Bread Food Bank.  It’s on Saturday December 14th from 8pm onwards.  Prohibition is 696 Queen St E (West of Broadview) – a favourite Riverside Hotspot.
